IP Addressing Primer

Port forwarding is enabled for 1433 but I will look at the software you recommended - Thanks

Just to keep things simple would like to get laptop working as a standalone first - when I start SSMS it asks me for a Server Name and in that box shows an IP address - something like 178.xx.xx.xxx.  Where do I set up the Server Name - what does that IP address represent.
